Castelo is one of the noblest and most traditional neighborhoods in Lisbon, marking the origins of the city. Centuries of history and magnificent views over the city and the river make this hill special for alfacinhas (alfacinha is a playful name for Lisboners, denoting their love for lettuce).
While an immense historical influence remains, the neighborhood is changing over time. New residents energize the streets, bringing a mix of young adults, gay couples and international students to the task of restoring original buildings and reclaiming existing spaces.
Chão do Loureiro, in Largo do Loureiro, exemplifies preserved buildings with recovered interior space. Covered parking, a supermarket and a panoramic restaurant overlooking the Tagus river can be found here. Two elevators provide access to this hilltop; the first elevator connects Rua dos Fanqueiros to Rua da Madalena and the second goes from Madalena to Costa do Castelo. Open spaces such as Pois Café or Castelo Wine Bar provide a refreshing break.
